Opening This Weekend

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Rated PG-13 - Starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchette, Hugo Weaving, Richard Armitage, Andy Serkis, Lee Pace and Benedict Cumberbatch

Peter Jackson takes us back to Middle Earth in the first chapter of a new trilogy.  One of the cool offerings you will experience if you see The Hobbit this weekend in IMAX 3D at NCG Cinemas in Grand Blanc will be a 9 minute sneak peek of the new Star Trek movie Star Trek Into Darkness.  The Hobbit is also revolutionary in that this will be the first film shot in a higher frame rate.  Every movie you have ever watched was shot at 24 Frames Per Second, but The Hobbit was shot at 48 Frames Per Second.  What this means is a clarity in cinema that no one has ever experienced.  Only a handful of theaters will be showing The Hobbit at the higher frame rate and you can click here for a list.  Plot wise Martin Freeman stars as Bilbo Baggins who goes on a journey to the Lonely Mountain with a vigorous group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure stolen from them by the dragon Smaug.

New Trailer Round-Up

Oblivion - April 19, 2013

Tom Cruise is back doing what he does best and that is entertaining people with smart, fun action movies.  A year ago he brought us Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, next weekend we get Jack Reacher and in April we get the new sci-fi film from Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy).  I lam absolutely in love with the look of this film and if you look at the poster above  I think you'll agree.  It has such a grandiose beauty to it.  Enough drooling, check out the trailer below.

After Earth - June 7, 2013

Here's a movie that I'm really skeptical about.  Any science fiction movie that has Will Smith in it has been great (minus Men In Black II) and his son, Jaden, showed he has some acting chops in The Karate Kid.  The problem you ask?  The director is M. Night Shyamalan.  The guy made three solid movies right in a row (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs) then it all went down hill from there.  I hope this movie puts him back on top, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Man of Steel - June 14, 2013

This is by far the movie I cannot wait to see and the trailer just reinforces how excited I am for this film.  The talent involved with the new Superman movie is staggering and is sure to be one of the absolute highlights of summer 2013.

Pacific Rim - July 12, 2013

Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy) returns to directing duties in his new monsters vs. robots film.  He hasn't had a movie come out since 2008's Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and this is a cool bit of trivia, because he spent two years working on the new Hobbit movie that releases this weekend.  Del Toro was originally set to direct The Hobbit, but because of MGM's financial woes a few years ago it looked as if the movie would never get off the ground.  Knowing this Del Toro finally stepped away from the project to pursue his next passion project which arrives in theaters next July.  Pacific Rim looks like it could be alot of fun especially if you are a fan of the Transformer or Godzilla movies.
